The Russian Federation took a direct course towards the exploration of the moon, continuing the process begun in the 60s of the last century. What will the new mission bring to the country? This was told by Yuri Kostitsyn, the head of the Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
At the end of November this year, the scientific and technical council of the state corporation Roscosmos and the council of the Russian Academy of Sciences discussed the concept of studying and mastering the natural satellite of our planet. Soon, the document will fall on the table to President Putin and the entire government for review and consolidation.
Kontitsyn explained that this project will not bring any dividends to the state budget for the period of the first five years of implementation, so there is no need to wait for a quick return, especially for the economic sphere. But in the matter of prestige, undoubtedly, a positive tendency will appear immediately. In general, as the expert believes, prestige is the main reason for which the United States of America and the Soviet Union clashed with each other in the struggle for the exploration of the moon half a century ago.
There is some kind of international treaty, according to which, the Moon cannot be the property of any one country. Nevertheless, Kostitsyn stressed, it is clear to everyone that the state, if it appears first on a space object, will receive unconditional preferences in choosing, for example, the most favorable places in terms of resources for building its bases. Therefore, no doubt, the world powers will do everything possible to cross the finish line in this incredibly important race by the leaders.
“It is difficult to say how much the exploration of the moon will be useful and beneficial for states in 20-30 years from now on. I think that humankind will not be able to live fully on the Moon soon, ”Yury Alexandrovich shared his opinion.
Predicting the development of the situation over the next ten years, Kostitsyn thinks that the lunar missions will be resumed by both Russia and the Americans. We should not also forget that China has noticeably advanced in the space sector, in preparation for the launch of orbiters to study the satellite. As for talking about lowered manned modules, they still remain only at the level of theory.
