Dragon 2 emergency rescue system will be tested on Saturday

NASA and SpaceX have scheduled key tests of the emergency rescue system (CAC) of the Dragon manned spacecraft on Saturday January 18th.

To test the CAC, the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket with serial number B1046 will be used, which has already completed three missions. It will be installed the second stage in an incomplete configuration, devoid of engines and some other systems.

The rocket starts on January 18 at 16:00 Moscow time (the launch window is four hours) from the launch pad No. 39A of the Space Center named after Kennedy in Florida. 1.5 minutes after the start at an altitude of about 20 km with the passage of maximum aerodynamic drag, the first stage of the Falcon 9 will turn off the engines, simulating an accident. Immediately after this, the ship should use the emergency rescue system, consisting of eight SuperDraco engines, to move away from the rocket to a safe distance. It is expected that the maximum elevation of the ship will be about 42-44 km. After that, Dragon 2 should shoot the luggage compartment and perform a soft parachute landing in the Atlantic Ocean.

The salvation of the first stage of the Falcon 9 is not planned.

This test remains the last obstacle to the first manned flight of the ship. If it succeeds, SpaceX and NASA will begin to prepare for the launch of the spacecraft to the ISS. It can take place already at the end of spring or this summer.
