Israel - USA: SpaceX launched into space Amos-17 satellite weighing 6.5 tons

Last night, the Israeli satellite Amos-17 was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The satellite is launched by the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The satellite was originally scheduled to launch last Saturday, but was delayed due to a valve failure on the rocket.

This is the ninth successful SpaceX mission. The Falcon 9 rocket was used a second time.

Amos-17 belongs to the Israeli company Spacecom. The previous launch of Spacecom – the Amos-6 satellite – ended in failure and loss of the satellite. During the pre-flight check of the engines, the launch vehicle exploded.

Amos-17 is designed to provide communications services on the African continent, the Middle East and Europe. The satellite will provide communications in the C-band, K-band and Ka-band. The satellite should last 20 years. The total cost of the satellite, including insurance, amounted to $ 250 million.

Amos-17 is an unusually heavy satellite. Its weight is 6,500 kilograms. Because of this, the Falcon 9 did not try to return to the ground. To place such a weight into a satellite’s orbit, it took all the fuel that the rocket could carry, and there were no more reserves left for the return trip.

Currently, the commercial cost of launching the Falcon 9 with a heavy load is $ 90 million, the standard launch is 62 million.

SpaceX is experimenting hard with recycling various parts of rockets. If the company previously managed to reuse the first-stage engines, then with the launch of Amos-17 it reached a new level, when it finally managed to save the rocket fairings.

Company founder Elon Musk said that after launching a rocket to the company's ship, GO Ms. Tree, managed to catch Falcon 9 fairings in their nets 2.5 km from the coast.
