NASA legend dies - mathematician Katherine Johnson

Thanks to Johnson, in 1969, the American manned ship Apollo 11 delivered the first earthlings to the moon.

MINSK, Feb 24 – Sputnik. The legendary NASA mathematician Catherine Johnson, who worked on calculating the trajectories of many missions at the agency, died in the United States at 102 years of age.

"We are saddened by the death of the famous mathematician Catherine Johnson. Today we celebrate her 101st year of life and honor her outstanding heritage, which destroyed racial and social barriers," the agency said.

Johnson joined NASA in 1953. For several decades, she worked at the agency for computer astronomical navigation, in particular, calculated the trajectories of many flights of the Mercury, Space Shuttle, and Apollo 11 mission to the Moon in 1969.

In 2015, Johnson received the highest US award, Medal of Freedom, from the hands of President Barack Obama.
