On the exoplanet in the constellation Pisces, it rains metal

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) reports that researchers were able to study an unusual planet with the designation WASP-76b, which is located outside the solar system.

The named object is located in the constellation Pisces at a distance of approximately 640 light-years from us. The peculiarity of this gigantic exoplanet is that it constantly faces its mother star with one “daytime” side. At the same time, the "night" side is immersed in eternal darkness.

The planet receives a huge amount of energy from its luminary: the temperature on the "day" side reaches 2400 degrees. This leads to the fact that molecules decay into atoms, and metals like iron evaporate.

On the "night" side, the temperature drops to about 1500 degrees. Such different conditions in the two hemispheres of the planet lead to strong winds that carry iron fumes from the hot "day" to the colder "night" side. Here the vapors condense into droplets and fall out in the form of metal rains.

“Observations show that the abundance of iron vapor in the atmosphere of WASP-76b is large on the hot day side of the planet. Part of the iron is transported to the night side due to the axial rotation of the planet and atmospheric winds. There, iron enters a much colder environment, condenses and falls out in the form of rain, ”the scientists say.

We add that the published data were the result of observations at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT).
