Photo of the day: the formation of one of the most massive structures in the universe

The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) presented a snapshot of a rare space phenomenon – the collision of four galaxy clusters at once.

Clusters of galaxies are gravitationally bound systems of galaxies, one of the largest structures in the Universe. Such objects contain from 100 to 1000 galaxies, hot X-ray gas and a large amount of dark matter.

The collision of four clusters of galaxies is observed in the Abell 1758 system, which is located approximately 3 billion light-years from us. Each of the interacting clusters here has a mass of at least several hundred trillion solar masses.

It is noted that the system contains two pairs of interacting clusters of galaxies. After merging, they form one of the most massive structures in the universe.

We add that a rare event is observed by various scientific instruments, including the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This device was launched back in 1999 for space exploration in the x-ray range. Initially, the life of the observatory was estimated at five years, but it continues to work to this day.
